Video Overview

The Sentence Builder is a tool used to build sophisticated sentences or to revise simple sentences into more elaborate and developed constructions.
Board: The large (33" X 22") board displays dotted boxes to velcro the parts of speech cards (click here), a long rectangular box to construct a sentence, and ample space to brainstorm vocabulary for the sentence.

Purpose: The Sentence Pattern Blueprints are color-coded cards that build three different written language sentences. These laminated full-color cards include adjectives, nouns, and verbs for the parts of speech, and why, how, where, and when questions to add modifiers to the sentence.
The red, yellow, and green color-coating represent a stop light. When students finish generating a sentence using these cards, they go back to the color-coding to check for many things.
The yellow (adjectives) means: Caution, caution, slow down! Do you have describing words in your sentence? The yellow card reminds students to use descriptive language in their sentence.
The red (nouns and verb) means: Red light, stop! Do the red words make sense? The red cards help students identify the simple subject and predicate to check for a complete sentence.
The green (modifiers) means: Green light, go! These cards can move around or travel in the sentence for varied sentences.

Sentence Pattern Blueprint Cards

This unique, interactive chart will boost your students' vocabulary levels. Students use this tool to aquire and to master more sophisticated words. Notice the three blank columns (adjectives, nouns, and verbs). While the teacher records new words in the columns, the students record on their Vocabulary Wall Topic Page.
Sentences: This wall chart displays transitions and modifiers to build powerful sentences. This means students learn new vocabulary, and use it in their writing.
Function and Meaning: To accurately and flexibly use new words, meaning and function are critical. New vocabulary words are recorded under the correct part of speech (function) accompanied by a definition, a synonym, or an icon (meaning).
Parts of Speech: Use these four cards to teach the parts of speech-Adjectives, Nouns, Verbs, and Modifiers.

This part of the manual is a handy reference that outlines step-by-step directions for the unique tools required to teach writing through the Writing Connections program.Notice the directions were provided in English with the blackline masters in English.Now the strategies and tools students use in Spanish match when they transition to writing in English. The appendices provide easy access to the Spanish blackline masters. This way, the teacher easily picks andchooses tools for use. If directions are needed or the English blackline, then the teacher refers to section one for the information or tool.
